Weight Loss Options

Billo-pancreatic diversion (BPD) or Duodenal Switch (DS)

How it works

The main body of the stomach is removed leaving only a small pouch, meaning you can eat a very small amount of food before feeling full. The digestive process is also shortened by bypassing a section of your intestine, meaning that fewer calories will be absorbed from the food you eat

The procedure

The BPD / DS procedure takes approximately 3 hours and usually involves a 3-4 night stay in hospital. Most patients are back at work after 2 weeks. It is a laparoscopic (keyhole) procedure so scarring is minimal.

It is the most complex and technically challenging weight loss procedure performed by only the most experienced surgeons and is only recommended to patients with a BMI over 60. It is however the most successful procedure, delivering excellent weight loss results.

Aftercare

Careful long term follow up is essential after a BPD / DS to help you achieve your weight loss goals and to ensure that your nutritional status is optimal.
