Gynaecomastia is a condition that affects men of all ages and means there is excessive breast tissue which often gives the appearance of having actual breasts.
It may be as a result of an imbalance of hormones, more notably during puberty, creating anxiety for teenage boys. It may also be due to excessive weight gain, where the excess fat is deposited around the breast and nipple area.
The surgery of choice is usually liposuction to the breast, however, it may be necessary to perform a more complex operation to remove breast tissue through a larger incision. Your Westbourne Centre surgeon will decide which procedure is necessary following a thorough examination and discussion with the patient.
Both these procedures will involve the use of a Local Anaesthetic with sedation and will take a few weeks to heal, following which normal activity can usually be resumed.
