Bunion Surgery at The Westbourne Centre

A bunion is a bony lump on the side of the foot at the base of the big toe, associated with the big toe pointing more to the side rather than straight ahead. It may be painful and make it difficult to wear certain shoes. Different surgical procedures can be used to treat this condition and our Consultants, Alastair Marsh and Helen Williams, will advise the most appropriate for you. Only rarely will your foot be in plaster after an operation and you will usually walk out of the clinic using crutches.

FREE bunion treatment is available through NHS Choose and Book. Ask you GP if they can refer you to The Westbourne Centre through this system, it is that simple.

Call us on 0121 456 0880 if you have any questions.

The Royal College of Surgeons PIP Clinical Guidance

The Westbourne Centre will help PIP Implant patients

The Westbourne Centre are here to help

Although at The Westbourne Centre we have never used PIP implants, we fully understand the worry and anxiety patients with PIP implants are feeling, particularly those whose private providers are not fulfilling their obligations to remove or change their implants. Instead of being treated with compassion and dignity, these patients are caught in a dilema and feel abandoned at a time when they feel that they need help and reassurance the most.

As a gesture of good will, the management at The Westbourne Centre would like to offer any patient who has un-ruptured PIP Implants (patients with ruptured PIP implants qualify for NHS treatment, even if they had private surgery), removal or replacement of their implants at a very minimum cost in recognition of the difficulties they are in and the severe anxiety they feel. The Westbourne Centre would like to demonstrate that many in the private sector DO care about patients and put people before profits.

We have been able to create this opportunity for women with PIP implants only due to the cooperation of a number of Consultant Anaesthetists and a group of Consultant Plastic Surgeons, who are all members of BAAPS and BAPRAS, in response to the plea by the two associations to their members to help these patients in any way they can, even if they were not involved in inserting PIP implants initially.

If you wish to find out more about the conditions that apply, please contact us on 0121 456 0880 or fill out our online enquiry form.

Advice on PIP Implants

We would like you to know that, at The Westbourne Centre, we have never used PIP implants. We only use high quality medical grade breast implants from long established reputable manufacturers.

If you have had Breast Augmentation and you are not sure what implants you have, contact the clinic, hospital or surgeon who carried out your operation and ask about the type of implants you have. Remember, you are entitled to get the precise information on this.

If you know that your implants are of the PIP type and have symptoms such as pain, swellings, tenderness and hardening of the breast(s) or enlarged lymph nodes with hard lumps forming in your underarm(s) you need to seek early advice. Try the clinic or the hospital where you had your surgery first. If you do not feel you are getting anywhere, contact your GP to refer you to a qualified NHS plastic surgeon in your area for advice and treatment.

If you know that your implants are of the PIP type, but have no problems with them, it is advisable to seek a consultation at some stage and perhaps have a scan of your breasts to check on the integrity of the implants. If they show signs of rupture, it is advisable to have the implants removed even if you do not have symptoms at the moment.

As it has been established that PIP implants contain industrial grade silicone gel instead of a medical grade, you are entitled to ask for the implants to be removed as a precaution, even if they are not ruptured. Alternatively, you may chose to have periodic scans to check on the implants, but you need to consider the cumulative cost of this option in the long term, in addition to the anxiety that it can generate.

The non-medical grade of silicone in PIP implants can provoke inflammatory reactions in the breasts and lymph glands in the underarms that can cause pain, discomfort, swelling and anxiety, but there is no evidence that it increases the risk of developing breast cancer.

If you had your surgery under the NHS, contact your GP or your surgeon at the hospital. If you wish to have a consultation at The Westbourne Centre with one of our consultant plastic surgeons, please contact us via our website or on 0121 456 0880.

Winter Skin

Winter Skin Care

As the winter season approaches and our skin is exposed to harsher contrasts in environment, we need to start thinking about changes in our skin care needs.

Going from icy cold wind outdoors to central heating indoors can really dry out our skin leaving it looking dull and tired.

Here are some tips for keeping your skin looking young and fresh throughout the winter months:

  • Continue to use a minimum of SPF 15 on any exposed skin during the winter as your skin is still exposed to harmful UVA and UVB rays. Even if you work indoors all day you’d be surprised how much exposure to these harmful rays you will still get, for example on your commute to work or through your car / office window.
  • I know we don’t feel like it in the cold months but try and drink as much water as you can – it really is fantastic for keeping your skin hydrated. If it’s too cold try hot water with lemon as an alternative.
  • You will probably find that you need a richer moisturiser to keep your skin soft and supple when the weather turns cold, even if you have an oily skin type. Make sure you look around and find a good one to suit your skin.
  • For a real boost to the texture and appearance of your skin try a course of Genuine Dermaroller treatments. This skin needling treatment stimulates the skins cells to regenerate and repair naturally leaving the skin healthier, brighter and younger looking.
  • To keep your lips kissably soft throughout winter use a good lip conditioner regularly and make sure your lips are protected when outdoors – Vaseline is great as a protective barrier against the elements.
  • Exfoliate once or twice weekly to get rid of those dead skin cells which dull the skin.  Regular exfoliation will keep your skin looking bright and dewy, and will also increase the nourishing benefits of your moisturiser.
