Mr Hickey qualified from the University of Birmingham in 1984 with the Sampson Gamgee Memorial Prize in Surgery. He trained in General Surgery in the West Midlands and gained the Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1988. Following this, Mr Hickey completed a thesis in Vascular research and was awarded a Doctor of Medicine degree in 1991.
He continued his training in Vascular Surgery in Birmingham. He was awarded the Patey Prize by the Surgical Research Society and a travelling scholarship from the Royal College of Surgeons to study at Harvard before becoming a Consultant in 1994.
Mr Hickey has specialised in the treatment of Varicose Veins and has helped to pioneer/develop minimally-invasive, ultrasound-guided surgery, endovenous thermal ablation (laser and radiofrequency ablation) and foam sclerotherapy. He has spoken at national and international meetings and has published research in this field. He has recently been appointed to the NICE varicose vein Guideline Development Group.
Mr Hickey is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon in the Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust
