Sclerotherapy is a treatment for small thread veins, also known as telangiectasia. It involves injecting the tiny veins with an irritant solution using a very fine needle. It is suitable for most areas of the body, but most commonly the legs and face. For the majority of people the treatment vastly improves their confidence and provides the opportunity to wear shorts and skirts that otherwise would not be an option.
The following reasons may prevent you having treatment:
This can vary depending on the severity of the veins and the time involved to break them down. Some patients require a minimum of 3 treatments which are spaced approximately 6-8 weeks apart. In more severe cases, a number of additional treatments may be recommended.
A topical anaesthetic can be used to numb the skin. However, you wil be aware of a sensation of the solution travelling along the vein. It will sting for a few seconds following each injection and you may have some tenderness in the area for 24 hours.
As soon as the treatment is finished , there will be redness in the area treated which will diminish over 48 hours. Facial areas tend to develop puffiness and you may want to take a day or 2 off work following treatment to this. Otherwise, most patients can return to normal activities straight away. Vigorous exercise is not recommended for 48 hours.
It will take 4-6 weeks after each treatment to appreciate the results. We expect to have to repeat treatment several times (3-6 sessions) at 6-8 weekly intervals to achieve optimum results. It is necessary to avoid extreme heat between the treatments and we suggest the use of a high factor sun protection to the treated areas and to avoid hot showers and bath.
