Well, you will be pleased to hear that the Non-Surgical treatment of Varicose Veins is our specialist area.
At The Westbourne Centre Birmingham, our accredited and experienced Consultant Vascular surgeons, Mr Nick Hickey and Mr Isaac Nyamekye provide a friendly and personalised service from initial consultation, right through to your aftercare.
We are proud to offer a range of Vein Treatments to suit your individual requirements including Foam Sclerotherapy, Radio Frequency Ablation (VNUS Closure) and Endovenous Laser Ablation (EVLA).
This treatment involves the injection of a sclerosant substance into the veins. You will only be suitable for this treatment if you have minor varicose veins (reticular veins) with no major value incompetence or thread/spider veins (telangectasia). This type of Sclerotherapy is called Microinjection Sclerotherapy and uses diluted solutions of sclerosant administered through very small needles.
This treatment is a great alternative to groin surgery and LSV stripping and treats the long saphenous vein (LSV). It can be either performed under Local Anaesthetic or General Anaesthetic. Guided by a duplex ultrasound, a catheter is placed in the LSV and heat is used to destroy the vein. This process avoids a groin incision and causes far less thigh bruising and and post operative pain than stripping. Avulsions and stab incisions of the visible varicose vein are still required, but often the veins can be left to shrivel naturally and any residual varicosities can be treated with Foam Sclerotherapy.

EVLA works in a similar way to VNUS Closure, but instead uses a laser fibre to close the LSV and is performed under Local Anaesthetic. The visible varicose veins tend not to be treated immediately as they usually decrease in size following the treatment. Any residual varicosities will require some additional treatment, which will most likely be Foam Sclerotherapy.
This is a Non-Surgical treatment which involves obliterating varicose veins (LSV, SSV and visible varicosities). It involves an injection of sclerosant foam into the veins under duplex imaging. Due to the fact that the varicosities are also treated, there is no need for avulsions following Foam Sclerotherapy, however more than one treatment may be required to achieve the desired effect.
All of our 'endovenous' procedures are performed under ultrasound control. Following your full clinical consultation with either Mr Hickey or Mr Nyamekye, they will personally perform a full duplex ultrasound scan of your leg veins. They will then be in a position to advise you as to which varicose vein treatment will best suit you and meet your individual requirements, taking into consideration your suitability for treatment, your potential speed of recovery, the degree of discomfort posed and the long term outcome for you.
You will then be free to select the treatment package that will suit your individual needs and lifestyle.
