A facelift can help men and women to 'wind the clock back' by reversing the effects of gravity and the signs of ageing on the face and jowls as well as improving the contour of the neck. The ultimate objective is to rejuvenate the face.
The type of facelift used depends upon the age of the patient and the extent of facial ‘sagging’. For self-conscious younger patients with minimal sagging, relatively minor suture techniques such as the silhouette lift can be used. This is often carried out under local anaesthetic and requires little time off work. However they do not last as long as conventional facelifts.
Alternatively, lipomodelling, using the patient’s own fat tissues to graft as filler material can rejuvenate the face without leaving scars and with lasting effects. It can be carried out either under general or local anaesthesia with sedation as a day case.
For more extensive problems and depending on the severity of the aging process, a variety of face lift operations are available that allows the, deeper layers of the face to be tightened. At the same time excess skin is removed but leaving a natural look.
Open facelift methods require hidden incisions in the hairline and close to the ear. These incisions eventually result in inconspicuous scars. Often the neck requires correction too, which may also include removal of unwanted fatty deposits, especially from under the chin.
A facelift can be performed under General Anaesthesia with a hospital stay or Local Anaesthesia with sedation and analgesia as a day case. For total facial rejuvenation surgery, a brow lift, eyelid correction and lipomodelling with fat graft, in addition to face and neck lift, may be necessary to produce an optimum result.
A facelift does not alter the quality of the skin. At The Westbourne Centre we give advice on all aspects of skin care, both pre and post-operatively. This may involve the application of special creams, laser or medispa treatment in order to achieve an optimum result.
There is usually swelling after surgery and sometimes bruising which takes up to two weeks to clear. Your consultants will give impartial advice and have a thorough discussion with you on the nature of the surgery, your suitability for it and the type of facelift procedure that can produce the optimum result in your case.
